Short stories
Some masters of the form talk about the idea of stories, and even read some of their work. For starters, there's T. C. Boyle. ' The joy of the story is that you can respond to the moment and events of the moment. The drawback is that once you've completed a story, you must write another even though you find yourself bereft of talent or ideas.
